Ruth 2:23
So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law.
Ruth 2:23 (KJV)
Context
The Book of Ruth is set during the time of the judges in Israel, a period often marked by spiritual and moral decline. Ruth, a Moabite widow, enters the Israelite community through her loyalty to Naomi. In this verse, she completes her first season of gleaning in Boaz’s fields, remaining close to his maidens through the barley and wheat harvests. These harvests together lasted several weeks, so her work was not a brief effort but a sustained commitment.
Meaning
Gleaning was a provision of God’s law for the poor and foreigners, allowing them to gather leftover grain (Leviticus 19:9-10; Deuteronomy 24:19-22). Ruth, being a widow and a foreigner, took advantage of this opportunity to provide for herself and Naomi. The phrase “kept fast” means she stayed close to Boaz’s maidens, remaining under the protection and provision that Boaz had arranged. Boaz had instructed his young men to let her glean among the sheaves and had commanded them not to touch her (Ruth 2:8-9, 15-16). By staying near his maidens, Ruth stayed within that safe place.
The verse also notes that Ruth “dwelt with her mother in law.” This indicates she remained in Naomi’s household, maintaining her family loyalty and care. Her obedience to Naomi’s advice (Ruth 2:22) and her acceptance of Boaz’s kindness demonstrate her humility and wisdom. She did not seek her own way but followed godly counsel.
Biblical connections
Ruth’s faithful service during the harvest sets the stage for God’s continued provision. Boaz, who later becomes her kinsman-redeemer, is a picture of God’s care for the vulnerable. The verse marks a transition: the harvest season ends, and the narrative moves toward Naomi’s plan for Ruth’s future (Ruth 3:1). Ruth’s diligence during this time prepared the way for that plan.
Application
Ruth’s dedication to her work teaches the value of perseverance and faithfulness. Even in challenging circumstances, she did not give up but continued to glean diligently through both harvests.
God is the ultimate provider. He orchestrates events and leads us to places where He can provide for our needs, just as He led Ruth to Boaz’s field.
Ruth’s commitment to Naomi is an example of loyalty and selflessness. It highlights the importance of standing by those we love and caring for one another, even in difficult times.
Reflection
Ruth’s story reminds us that faithful labor, obedience to godly counsel, and trust in God’s providential care are never wasted. Her loyalty ultimately led to her finding a new family and being part of God’s redemptive plan. We are encouraged to trust in God’s provision, remain faithful in our responsibilities, and value relationships built on loyalty and love. Her example shows that small daily acts of service can have lasting significance in God’s purposes.
