Ruth 4:14
And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
Ruth 4:14 (KJV)
Context
The book of Ruth tells how a Moabite woman named Ruth stayed loyal to her mother-in-law, Naomi, after both had lost their husbands. In this verse, the women of Bethlehem speak to Naomi with joy and praise. Their words come just after Ruth has married Boaz, a close relative of Naomi’s late husband, and after the birth of a son. This moment closes the story of loss and journey with a public blessing.
Meaning
The women bless the Lord because He has not left Naomi without a kinsman. This kinsman is Boaz, who acted as the family redeemer by marrying Ruth and restoring the family line and land. The phrase “that his name may be famous in Israel” expresses the hope that the child, Obed, would be honored. That hope was fulfilled, for Obed became the grandfather of King David (Ruth 4:17, 22). The women’s words are a doxology, praising God for His active care in providing for Naomi.
Biblical connections
The word “kinsman” points to the Old Testament role of the kinsman-redeemer, a relative who could buy back land or rescue a family member in need. Here, Boaz fulfills that role for Naomi and Ruth. This act of redemption looks ahead to a greater Redeemer. Through this family line, God preserved the ancestry that would lead to David and finally to Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who redeems His people from sin. The verse shows God’s providence in preserving the lineage that would bring the Savior.
Application
This verse encourages believers to trust in God’s faithful provision, even after times of loss and hardship. Naomi had suffered greatly, yet the Lord had quietly arranged events for her good. God often works through ordinary people and everyday circumstances to bring about extraordinary blessings. The women’s praise also reminds us to recognize and celebrate God’s care when we see it, and to support one another within the family of God. Their example teaches us to give thanks publicly for what God has done.
Reflection
Consider how God has provided for you in difficult seasons. Like Naomi, you may not see His hand at first, but He is faithful. The same God who gave Naomi a redeemer has given the world a Savior. Let this verse lead you to thank Him for His unfailing love and to trust His plan, even when the path is unclear.
