Song of Solomon 4:12

Listen to this article

“A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.”

Context:The Song of Solomon, also known as the Song of Songs, is a poetic book in the Old Testament attributed to King Solomon. It is a collection of love poems between a bride (the Shulammite woman) and her bridegroom (believed to be Solomon). The verses express deep affection, longing, and desire between the two lovers, but they are also seen as allegorical in representing the relationship between Christ and the Church.

Meaning: In Song of Solomon 4:12, the bridegroom refers to his beloved as his sister and spouse. These terms symbolize their close bond, unity, and the purity of their relationship. The imagery of a garden, spring, and fountain conveys a sense of exclusivity and intimacy. The garden is enclosed, suggesting privacy and protection, and the spring is shut up and the fountain sealed, representing the woman’s virginity and her devotion exclusively to her husband.

1. Symbolism of the Sister and Spouse: Referring to the bride as both sister and spouse emphasizes the deep emotional connection and the sacredness of the marital relationship. The term “sister” may represent their close friendship and the shared spiritual heritage. It also highlights the importance of treating one’s spouse with love, respect, and familiarity.

2. Symbolism of the Garden: The garden in this verse represents the bride’s beauty, purity, and fertility. It reflects a place of growth and abundance. In the context of marriage, the garden can symbolize the sacred space of intimacy between husband and wife, where love and companionship flourish.

3. Symbolism of the Spring and Fountain: The spring and fountain mentioned in this verse represent the bride’s virginity and her exclusivity to her bridegroom. Just as a sealed spring preserves its water, the bride has kept herself pure and dedicated herself solely to her beloved. This imagery highlights the importance of sexual purity within the context of marriage.

Application:

  • – Marriage and Intimacy: Song of Solomon portrays the beauty of love and intimacy within the boundaries of marriage. It teaches us the significance of cherishing and honoring our spouse, cultivating a deep emotional connection, and maintaining purity in our relationships.
  • – Commitment and Faithfulness: The verse emphasizes the exclusivity of the bride’s devotion to her bridegroom. It reminds us of the importance of faithfulness, loyalty, and commitment in our relationships, both with our spouses and with God. We are called to be devoted to our partners and to honor the covenant of marriage.
  • – Spiritual Significance: The Song of Solomon can also be seen as an allegory of the relationship between Christ and the Church. As believers, we are called to have an intimate, exclusive, and committed relationship with Jesus Christ. The verse encourages us to value and protect our relationship with Him, seeking His presence and keeping ourselves pure for Him.
