Listen to this article

“How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! how much better is thy love than wine! and the smell of thine ointments than all spices!”

Context and Background:Song of Solomon, also known as Song of Songs, is a poetic book in the Old Testament. It is a collection of love poems and songs traditionally attributed to King Solomon. The book portrays the passionate and romantic love between a bride (the Shulammite woman) and her beloved (the bridegroom).

Appreciating Love:In Song of Solomon 4:10, the bridegroom expresses his admiration for the love of his bride. He compares her love to wine and her ointments to spices, emphasizing their surpassing excellence. This verse celebrates the beauty and intensity of their love for each other.

Symbolism:a) Love: The love between the bride and the bridegroom represents the deep affection, intimacy, and devotion that exists between them. It is a love that is cherished and esteemed.

b) Wine: Wine is often associated with joy, celebration, and pleasure. By comparing the bride’s love to wine, the bridegroom highlights its intoxicating and delightful nature.

c) Ointments and spices: In biblical times, ointments and spices were used for anointing, perfuming, and enhancing beauty. The bride’s ointments and spices symbolize her attractiveness, both in physical appearance and in her loving nature.

The Bride’s Love:The bride’s love is depicted as exceptional and praiseworthy. It is valued more highly than wine or any fragrant spices. This illustrates the bridegroom’s deep appreciation for the affection and devotion she shows towards him. It also highlights the significance of love in a marital relationship.

  • Reflecting on our own relationships:Song of Solomon can serve as a reminder of the beauty and importance of love in our own relationships, whether it be in marriage, friendship, or our relationship with God. We should strive to value and express love for one another genuinely and passionately.
  • Prioritizing love:The bridegroom’s comparison of love to wine and spices encourages us to prioritize and treasure love above material possessions or temporary pleasures. Love has the power to intoxicate and bring joy like no other worldly thing can.
  • Appreciating the uniqueness of love:Just as the bride’s love is esteemed and praised, we should recognize the unique qualities and expressions of love that exist in our relationships. Each person’s love is special and deserving of acknowledgment and gratitude.

Remember to read and study the entire book of Song of Solomon to gain a deeper understanding of the beautiful love story it portrays.
