Song of Solomon 4:9

Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.

Song of Solomon 4:9 (KJV)

The Song of Solomon, also called the Song of Songs, is a poetic book in the Old Testament. It is attributed to King Solomon and presents a dialogue between a bridegroom and his bride. The book may be read as a celebration of human love in marriage, and it has also been understood as a picture of the love between God and His people. In this verse, the bridegroom speaks to his beloved with words of deep affection.

The Hebrew word translated “ravished” means to be seized or captured. The bridegroom says his heart has been taken captive by his bride. He repeats the phrase “thou hast ravished my heart” to show how strong his emotion is. He calls her “my sister, my spouse.” These are terms of endearment and covenant intimacy, not literal family ties. “Sister” points to closeness and trust, while “spouse” points to their marriage bond.

The bridegroom says that even “one of thine eyes” and “one chain of thy neck” have captured him. A single glance from her eye and a single ornament on her neck are enough to move him completely. This shows that her beauty and attention have great power over him. The verse celebrates the delight of mutual love within marriage, where even small signs of affection are precious.

In the New Testament, the Church is described as the bride of Christ, and Christ is the bridegroom. This verse can illustrate Christ’s deep love for His Church. Just as the bridegroom’s heart is ravished by his bride, Christ is moved by the sincere devotion of His people. The bride’s eye and chain may represent her attention and adornment. Even the smallest expression of her love and faithfulness delights her Beloved.

This verse encourages believers to give wholehearted devotion to Christ. He treasures the love of His people, even when it seems small or simple. A sincere prayer, a kind act, or a faithful choice can move the heart of God. Believers are also called to fix their eyes on Christ and to adorn their lives with the beauty of holiness. This means growing in love, kindness, and obedience, knowing that Christ values these qualities.

The verse also affirms the goodness of romantic love in marriage. Human love, when pure and faithful, reflects the divine love between Christ and His Church. Husbands and wives can learn from this verse to cherish one another and to be moved by even the small gestures of affection. Such love is a gift from God and a witness to His character.

The Song of Solomon is poetry, so it should be read with care. It is not a literal instruction for every detail of life, but it reveals the depth of love that God designed for marriage and for His relationship with His people. The bridegroom’s ravished heart reminds us that love is not cold or distant. It is warm, personal, and deeply moving. God delights in His people, and He calls them to respond to His love with devotion and joy.

Consider how your own heart responds to Christ. Does your love for Him show in your attention and your daily choices? Even one glance of faith or one act of obedience can be precious to Him. Let this verse encourage you to love Christ more fully and to let your life be adorned with the beauty of a faithful heart.
