Song of Solomon 4:7
Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.
Song of Solomon 4:7 (KJV)
Context
The Song of Solomon is a poetic book in the Old Testament, often attributed to King Solomon. Many readers understand it as a picture of love between a bridegroom and his bride, and also as a symbol of God’s love for His people. In this verse, the bridegroom speaks directly to the bride with words of complete approval.
Meaning
The phrase “Thou art all fair, my love” means that the bride is entirely beautiful in the eyes of the bridegroom. The words “there is no spot in thee” declare that he sees no flaw or blemish in her. This is not a claim about her own perfection, but a statement of his loving acceptance. He delights in her completely and without reserve.
Biblical connections
This language of being without spot or blemish appears elsewhere in Scripture. In the Old Testament, an animal offered to God had to be without blemish (Leviticus 22:21). That requirement pointed to the perfect sacrifice of Christ, who was without sin. Through His redemptive work, believers are seen by God as clean and righteous. The New Testament calls the Church the Bride of Christ, and Christ loves the Church and gave Himself for her so that she might be holy and without blemish (Ephesians 5:25-27). So this verse beautifully pictures how Christ sees His people: not because of their own merit, but because of His grace.
Application
Because God declares believers to be “all fair” in Christ, they can find their identity and worth in Him. Their value does not depend on outward appearance, achievements, or the approval of others. This secure love gives a foundation for confident and grateful living. At the same time, this grace calls believers to pursue holiness. Since God sees them as spotless in Christ, they are invited to live in a way that reflects His purity, allowing Him to remove the blemishes of sin from their daily lives.
Identity in Christ: Believers are deeply loved and accepted by God through faith in Jesus, not by their own works.
Pursuit of holiness: God’s transforming love encourages believers to grow in righteousness and reflect His beauty.
Reflection
This verse invites every believer to rest in the secure, affirming love of Christ. He sees His people as completely beautiful and without blemish because of His sacrifice. This love is a free gift, not a reward for performance. It calls for a response of trust, gratitude, and a desire to live in a way that honors the One who declares us fair.
