Song of Solomon 4:6

Listen to this article

“Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.”

Context:The Song of Solomon, also known as the Song of Songs, is a poetic book in the Old Testament attributed to King Solomon. It is a collection of love poems that depict the beauty of romantic love between a bride (the Shulammite woman) and her bridegroom (Solomon). The language used in this book is rich in metaphors and symbolic imagery.

Symbolism and Interpretation:In Song of Solomon 4:6, the bride, representing the Shulammite woman, speaks of seeking refuge and safety until the dawn arrives and the shadows disappear. Let’s explore the symbolism in this verse:

– "Until the day break": This phrase can be understood both literally and metaphorically. Literally, it refers to the break of dawn, the end of the night and the beginning of a new day. Metaphorically, it speaks of a time of deliverance or a season of blessings and restoration.

– "And the shadows flee away": Shadows often symbolize darkness, doubt, and difficulties. Here, the fleeing shadows represent the departure of troubles or challenges that may overshadow the individual.

– "I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense": The mountains of myrrh and the hills of frankincense are metaphors for a place of safety and sanctuary. Myrrh and frankincense were precious substances used in worship and offerings in the Old Testament. They can represent a spiritual refuge, a place of intimacy with God, or a sanctuary of peace and tranquility.

Spiritual Application:

  • Seeking God’s Presence:The verse encourages us to seek refuge in God’s presence, especially during challenging times. Just as the bride seeks the mountain and hill, we can find solace and strength in drawing near to God through prayer, worship, and meditation on His Word.
  • Hope and Deliverance:The anticipation of the daybreak and the fleeing shadows reminds us that our trials and hardships are temporary. We can trust that God will bring deliverance, restoration, and blessings in due time. This verse encourages us to hold onto hope and remain steadfast in our faith.
  • Worship and Offering:The reference to myrrh and frankincense points to the act of worship and offering. As believers, we can offer our prayers, praise, and thanksgiving to God, acknowledging His worthiness and seeking His presence. This verse reminds us of the importance of a lifestyle of worship and a heart that is devoted to God.

Overall, Song of Solomon 4:6 expresses the longing for safety, deliverance, and intimate communion with God. It encourages us to seek God’s presence, trust in His faithfulness, and find refuge in Him during challenging seasons of life.
