Zechariah 10:2

For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.

Context

Zechariah prophesied after the Israelites returned from Babylonian captivity to rebuild the temple and reestablish their nation. In this verse, he confronts the idols and false prophets who were leading the people astray. The Hebrew term for idols here is “teraphim,” household gods, indicating that the idolatry was both personal and pervasive. These household deities were consulted as sources of guidance, yet they were powerless objects rather than living helpers.

Meaning

The idols are described as speaking vanity, meaning they are powerless and offer no true guidance. The diviners, who claimed supernatural knowledge, have seen lies and told false dreams. Their comfort is in vain because it is not grounded in truth. The verse draws a sharp contrast between these false sources of direction and the true Shepherd whom God would provide. As a result, the people are depicted as wandering like a flock without a shepherd, troubled and afflicted because they lack true spiritual leadership. The image of scattered sheep conveys both vulnerability and confusion, showing what happens when people rely on deceptive voices instead of God’s word.

Biblical connections

In biblical imagery, the shepherd guides, protects, and cares for the flock. Without a true shepherd, the people were lost and vulnerable.
