Zechariah 11:4

Thus saith the Lord my God; Feed the flock of the slaughter;

Zechariah 11:4 (KJV)

The book of Zechariah is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. It contains a series of visions and messages given to the prophet Zechariah during the post-exilic period, when the Jews were returning from Babylonian captivity to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple. Zechariah’s prophecies address the restoration of Jerusalem, the coming Messiah, and future events related to Israel.

This verse employs symbolic language. Throughout the book of Zechariah, the Lord uses various images and metaphors to convey His message. In this verse, the flock of the slaughter represents the people of Israel, who were destined for destruction due to their disobedience and rejection of God’s ways.

The verse begins with “Thus saith the Lord my God,” indicating that the words spoken are from God Himself. The phrase “the Lord my God” shows a direct message from God, with Zechariah as His prophetic messenger. The Lord instructs Zechariah to “feed the flock of the slaughter.” This command carries both a literal and a spiritual meaning.

In the literal sense, the phrase “feed the flock” refers to the act of shepherding or tending to a group of sheep. Shepherds were responsible for leading, protecting, and providing for their flocks. In this context, God instructs Zechariah to care for the people of Israel, who were likened to sheep. It implies a call to be a shepherd who guides and nourishes God’s people.

Beyond the literal interpretation, this verse carries a deeper spiritual meaning. It reflects God’s concern for His people even when they are in a state of judgment or facing impending calamity. Despite their disobedience and the consequences they would face, God still extends His care and provision. It reveals God’s mercy and compassion toward His people, even in the midst of judgment. The command to feed such a flock highlights the faithfulness required of a shepherd even when the flock is under judgment, and it underscores God’s sovereign direction in the midst of national calamity.

This verse can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep (John 10:11). In Him, we see the ultimate fulfillment of God’s command to care for the flock, as He sacrificed Himself on the cross for the salvation of humanity. Some Christian commentary identifies the speaker as the Messiah, who calls the Lord His God as man and Mediator, and the flock as the Jewish people to whom Christ was sent as a prophet to teach and instruct.

As followers of Christ today, we can draw spiritual principles from this verse. We are called to be shepherds of God’s flock, caring for and nurturing those around us. This includes providing spiritual guidance, teaching God’s Word, and demonstrating Christ’s love through our actions. It reminds us of the responsibility we have to show compassion and care for others, even in difficult times.

Zechariah 11:4 conveys God’s command to Zechariah to feed the flock of the slaughter. It represents God’s care for His people, even in times of judgment, and serves as a reminder for us to shepherd and care for others in a similar way. Ultimately, it points to the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, who selflessly laid down His life for us.
