Zechariah 12:5

And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the Lord of hosts their God.

Zechariah 12:5 (KJV)

The book of Zechariah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written by the prophet Zechariah during the post-exilic period. His message encouraged the people of Israel, particularly those who had returned from Babylonian captivity, to rebuild the temple and renew their commitment to God. Zechariah’s prophecy came at a time when the people of Judah faced challenges and opposition from surrounding nations as they sought to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple. In this setting, Zechariah prophesied about future events concerning Jerusalem.

Zechariah 12:5 records the inner conviction of the governors of Judah. The phrase “in their heart” indicates a secret, internal acknowledgment, suggesting a genuine recognition of where true strength lies. The governors, the administrative and ruling authorities in the region, observe the inhabitants of Jerusalem and declare that these inhabitants shall be their strength. This is not merely physical or military support; it is strength located “in the LORD of hosts their God.” The title “LORD of hosts” underscores God’s sovereign power over all heavenly and earthly forces, providing the foundation for the confidence expressed. The governors recognize that their strength and protection come from the Almighty God who commands angelic armies and is the ultimate source of power.

The verse highlights a unity between the leadership of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. The governors acknowledge that they cannot accomplish their goals alone but need the participation and solidarity of the people. Together, as they trust in God, they become a force that cannot be easily shaken. This unity and mutual support among God’s people, rooted in dependence on Him, is a central theme of the verse. The leaders find their strength in the people of Jerusalem, and both find their ultimate strength in God.

The broader prophecy in Zechariah 12 concerns Jerusalem’s future deliverance and restoration. The governors of the rest of the cities in Judea observe the armies of the people being smitten by the Lord, and they take heart and are of good courage. This context reinforces that the strength of Jerusalem’s inhabitants is not merely physical but is rooted in their reliance on God’s protection. The theological truth that God is the ultimate source of strength for His people is emphasized throughout the passage.

Unity and solidarity: The verse reminds us of the significance of unity within the community of believers. When we come together, supporting and encouraging one another, we can face challenges with greater strength and resolve. Dependence on God: Just as the governors recognized that their strength came from God, we should acknowledge our reliance on Him in every aspect of our lives. Trusting in God’s guidance and seeking His strength enables us to overcome obstacles. Encouragement in difficult times: Zechariah’s prophecy served to encourage the people during a challenging period. Likewise, we can find encouragement in the promises of God’s Word, knowing that He is with us and will empower us to face any adversity.

Zechariah 12:5 emphasizes the unity, dependence on God, and encouragement among the leaders and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Their acknowledgment of God as their source of strength serves as a reminder for us to rely on Him in our lives and find support within the community of believers. The inner conviction of the governors models a quiet confidence that God alone secures His people.
