Zechariah 14:16
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.
Zechariah 14:16 (KJV)
Context
Zechariah ministered to the Israelites after their return from Babylonian captivity, encouraging them as they rebuilt Jerusalem and the temple. Chapter 14 describes a day when Jerusalem will be attacked, but God will intervene and deliver the city, establishing His reign as King over all the earth.
Meaning
In Zechariah 14:16 the prophet describes a future time when the survivors of all the nations that came against Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts. This language implies a universal recognition and submission to God as the ultimate authority. The nations that once opposed Jerusalem will not be destroyed entirely; a remnant will remain, preserved by grace, and they will acknowledge the Lord and worship Him. This worship is not a one-time event but an ongoing, yearly pilgrimage to Jerusalem, signifying a lasting and regular recognition of God’s sovereignty.
The verse also mentions the observance of the Feast of Tabernacles (or Booths), an important annual festival that commemorated Israel’s wilderness journey and God’s provision and protection. Its inclusion here suggests that even the nations will join in this celebration of God’s presence and faithfulness. In the prophetic context the feast signifies that this celebration will continue in the future as a time of rejoicing and thanksgiving to God.
Biblical connections
Beyond its literal meaning, the passage points to a time when people of every nationality will worship the King, the LORD of hosts. It therefore signals the ultimate triumph of God’s kingdom and the universal acknowledgment of His sovereignty. Christians understand that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, fulfilled many of the Old Testament prophecies. His life, death, and resurrection inaugurated God’s kingdom on earth. While the complete fulfillment of Zechariah’s vision is still future, the spread of the Gospel and the inclusion of peoples from every nation into the body of Christ are seen as a foretaste of that promised worship.
Application
Zechariah 14:16 reminds believers of the future hope that awaits the church. It encourages perseverance in faith and a commitment to proclaim the Gospel to all nations, knowing that worship of the King is intended for everyone, not a limited group. The survivors, once enemies, become worshippers, illustrating the triumph of God’s grace and the ultimate fulfillment of His purposes. Believers are called to live in anticipation of the day when all nations gather before God in worship and unity, and to cultivate a lifestyle of regular, devoted worship that anticipates that coming day.
Reflection
Zechariah 14:16 speaks of a future era when the remnants of the nations that opposed Jerusalem will worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and keep the Feast of Tabernacles. The passage emphasizes the universal recognition of God’s sovereignty and points toward the ultimate fulfillment of His kingdom. As followers of Christ we can find encouragement in this promise, trusting that our worship and proclamation of the Gospel participate in God’s plan for all nations.
