Zechariah 14:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:52
Listen to this article

“And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.”

Context:The book of Zechariah is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. It contains visions and messages from God, given to the prophet Zechariah during the post-exilic period when the Israelites were returning from Babylonian captivity. Zechariah’s prophecies include messages of restoration, hope, and the future Messianic era.

The Messianic prophecy:Zechariah 14:4 is a Messianic prophecy that points to the future coming of the Messiah. It describes a specific event that will take place “in that day” – a phrase often used in the Bible to refer to the eschatological or end-time period.

The mount of Olives:The verse states that “his feet shall stand…upon the mount of Olives.” The mount of Olives is a mountain ridge located east of Jerusalem, with a view overlooking the city. In biblical times, it held significant spiritual and historical importance. Jesus Himself spent time on the mount of Olives during His earthly ministry.

The splitting of the mount of Olives:The prophecy states that the mount of Olives will split in the midst thereof, creating a great valley. Half of the mountain will move toward the north, and half will move toward the south. This vivid imagery signifies a remarkable geological event that will occur at the Messiah’s return.

Symbolic and literal interpretation:Interpreting this verse can involve both symbolic and literal aspects. Symbolically, the splitting of the mount of Olives represents a momentous event, signifying the dramatic intervention of God and the establishment of His kingdom on earth. Literally, it suggests a significant geological change in the landscape during the end times.

Fulfillment in Jesus Christ:Christians believe that this prophecy finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. When Jesus ascended into heaven after His resurrection, He left His disciples from the mount of Olives (Acts 1:9-12). Therefore, His return to the same location is seen as a powerful and significant event.

Significance for believers:Zechariah 14:4 reminds believers of the future hope they have in Jesus Christ. It speaks of the ultimate triumph and reign of the Messiah. It points to a time when all things will be made new and when Jesus will establish His eternal kingdom. This verse encourages believers to look forward to the fulfillment of God’s promises and to live in light of this future hope.
