And ye shal flee to the valley of the mountaines: for the valley of the mountaines shal reach vnto Azal: yea, ye shall flee like as yee fled from before the earthquake in the dayes of Uzziah king of Iudah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the Saints with thee. Zechariah 14:5 (KJV)

And ye shall flee

to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee. Zechariah 14:5 (KJV)

Zechariah was a prophet who lived during the time when the Israelites were returning from Babylonian exile to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. His prophecies primarily focused on encouraging the people to complete the task of rebuilding and to remain faithful to God. The verse in question, Zechariah 14:5, is part of a larger prophecy that describes the future Day of the Lord and the events leading up to it.

In this verse, Zechariah describes a time when people will flee to the valley of the mountains. The exact location and specific circumstances are not clear from this verse alone. However, the context suggests that this could be a reference to a time of trouble or tribulation when people will seek safety and refuge. The reference to a “valley of the mountains” appears later in the chapter (verses 8‑9) and is not part of the immediate quotation.

Zechariah compares the fleeing to the valley of the mountains with the earthquake that occurred during the reign of King Uzziah of Judah. This historical allusion underscores the severity of the forthcoming crisis and the urgency of seeking refuge. The earthquake is referenced in Amos 1:1: “The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.”

The verse concludes with a powerful statement that the LORD, the God of Zechariah, will come, and all the saints will be with Him.

Zechariah 14:5, within the broader context of Zechariah’s prophecies, points to a future event known as the Day of the Lord. This refers to a time when God will intervene in human history to judge the wicked, deliver His people, and establish His kingdom. The fleeing to the valley of the mountains signifies the need for God’s people to seek His protection and refuge during times of trouble. The mention of the LORD’s presence suggests divine intervention, which many Christian traditions understand as anticipating the second coming of Christ and the gathering of believers. It highlights the hope and assurance of God’s ultimate victory over evil and the fulfilment of His promises.

Interpretations of eschatological passages like Zechariah 14:5‑6 vary among theological traditions. It is advisable to consult various commentaries and seek additional perspectives for a comprehensive understanding.
