Zechariah 5:7

And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.

Context

The prophet Zechariah ministered to Jewish exiles who had returned from Babylon to Jerusalem. Under Zerubbabel the governor and Joshua the high priest, the people were rebuilding the temple. Zechariah’s visions encouraged them in faith and obedience. This vision forms part of a larger section in chapters 5 and 6 that depicts the removal of wickedness from the land and the establishment of God’s kingdom.

Meaning

Zechariah often used visions and symbolic language. Here a talent of lead—a large unit of weight—is lifted up, and a woman sits inside an ephah, a dry measure of about 22 liters. The lead is heavy and sealing, suggesting the weight of judgment and the suppression of evil. The woman in the midst of the ephah symbolizes wickedness or sin, and her position indicates prominence or influence within the community. The lifting of the lead cover exposes what was hidden, showing that God will bring hidden sins to light.

Biblical connections

This vision follows the flying scroll in Zechariah 5:1-4, which pronounced a curse on thieves and those who swore falsely.
