Zechariah 9:16

And the Lord their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.

Zechariah 9:16 (KJV)

Zechariah 9:16 concludes a prophecy of divine deliverance and restoration. The preceding verse describes the Lord defending His people and fighting for them, so this verse presents the outcome of that victory: the Lord their God shall save them. The phrase “in that day” points to a specific time of divine intervention, often understood in the context of the coming of the Gospel age and the salvation of God’s people.

The verse first declares, “And the Lord their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people.” The salvation is comprehensive—deliverance from sin, Satan, the law, wrath to come, and from all enemies—and it is attributed solely to the Lord, who is called “their God,” emphasizing covenant relationship. The imagery of a flock underscores God’s care and guidance, portraying believers as sheep under the Good Shepherd.

The second movement adds, “for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.” As stones in a crown, believers are precious and glorious in God’s sight, reflecting His splendor. Being “lifted up as an ensign” (a banner or standard) suggests that God’s people are a visible testimony to His power and salvation, displayed prominently in His land.

Readers should listen first for the claim the verse actually makes, then consider the response its setting calls for—such as repentance, faith, endurance, hope, or worship—without claiming more than the text establishes. The verse is a message of hope and assurance for God’s people, emphasizing that their salvation is certain and that they are valued and displayed by God.

Accordingly, the meaning of Zechariah 9:16 should be drawn from the verse itself and the lines around it, keeping explanation and application faithful to the text. The Lord saves His flock, and He lifts them up as a crown and a banner—precious in His sight and visible as His testimony.
