Zechariah 9:4

Listen to this article

“Behold, the Lord will cast her out, and he will smite her power in the sea; and she shall be devoured with fire.”

Zechariah 9:4 is a verse from the book of Zechariah, which is one of the prophetic books found in the Old Testament. This verse is part of a larger section where Zechariah delivers messages of judgment against various nations, including Tyre and Sidon.

In this particular verse, the prophet Zechariah speaks of the impending judgment that God will bring upon Tyre. Tyre was a prominent city and seaport in ancient Phoenicia. It was known for its wealth, commerce, and military power. However, the city had also been involved in sinful practices and had oppressed God’s people.

The verse begins with the proclamation, “Behold, the Lord will cast her out.” This indicates that God Himself will execute judgment against Tyre. The term “her” refers to the city of Tyre personified as a female entity.

The phrase “cast her out” implies that Tyre will be forcefully expelled or driven away, suggesting a loss of power and influence. The next part of the verse states, “and he will smite her power in the sea.” This indicates that God will strike down Tyre’s naval strength and dominance over the sea.

Tyre’s maritime power and prosperity depended on its ability to control trade routes and navigate the waters effectively. God’s judgment will diminish Tyre’s influence in this regard. Finally, the verse concludes with the phrase, “and she shall be devoured with fire.” This metaphorical language suggests that Tyre will face destruction and devastation.

The mention of fire indicates the severity of the judgment that God will bring upon the city. It signifies complete ruin and annihilation. Overall, Zechariah 9:4 serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and His ability to execute judgment upon nations. It also highlights the consequences of sinful behaviour and the importance of obedience to God’s commands.

In the case of Tyre, their wealth, power, and sinful practices led to their downfall and destruction.
