Zechariah 7 reveals a significant event in the fourth year of King Darius of Persia. People from Bethel sent a delegation to inquire about fasting and mourning, seeking God’s favor. The prophet Zechariah was directed by the Lord to respond to their query. Instead of providing a direct answer, God questioned their motive behind fasting.
The Lord reminded them of their ancestors’ disobedience, which led to their exile. He emphasized that their religious rituals were performed with self-interest, lacking sincerity and true devotion to God. God desired them to practice justice, kindness, and compassion towards one another, instead of focusing solely on religious observances.
