Zechariah 7:9

Thus speaketh the Lord of hostes, saying, Execute true iudgement, and shew mercie and compassions euery man to his brother. Zechariah 7:9 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of Zechariah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written by the prophet Zechariah during the time of the Jewish people’s return from exile in Babylon. Zechariah’s prophecies were meant to encourage and challenge the people of Israel to rebuild the temple and renew their commitment to God.

Understanding the Verse: In Zechariah 7:9, the Lord of hosts is speaking through the prophet, conveying His message to the people of Israel. The verse provides three key instructions for the people to follow:

  • Execute True Judgment: The Lord calls for the execution of true judgment, which implies rendering just decisions and carrying out justice. It emphasizes the importance of fairness, righteousness, and integrity in their dealings with one another. This command reminds the people that God desires a society characterized by justice and righteous behavior.
  • Show Mercy: The Lord also instructs the people to show mercy. Mercy involves extending compassion, kindness, and forgiveness to others, even when they may not deserve it. It reflects God’s own compassionate and forgiving nature and demonstrates His desire for His people to reflect His character in their interactions with one another.
  • Compassion for One Another: The Lord further emphasizes the importance of showing compassion toward each other. This command emphasizes the need for empathy, love, and care within the community. It encourages the people to treat each other as brothers and sisters, displaying a genuine concern for their well‑being.

Application to Our Lives: Zechariah 7:9 holds relevance and application for believers today. Key lessons include:

  • Pursue Justice: As followers of God, we are called to pursue justice and righteousness in our interactions with others. This means treating people fairly, upholding truth, and standing against injustice. We should strive to be people of integrity and fairness in all our dealings.
  • Extend Mercy: Just as God has shown us mercy, we are called to extend mercy to others. This involves forgiving those who have wronged us, showing kindness to the needy, and being compassionate toward those who are hurting. By extending mercy, we reflect God’s character and His redemptive work in our lives.
  • Display Compassion: God desires that we display compassion to one another. We should be willing to empathize with others, listen to their needs, and offer support and encouragement. Compassion fosters unity and builds strong relationships within the community of believers.

In summary, Zechariah 7:9 reminds us of the importance of executing true judgment, showing mercy, and displaying compassion. By following these instructions, we can honour God and contribute to a just, merciful, and compassionate society.
