Psalms 68:31

Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.

Psalms 68:31 (KJV)

Psalm 68 is a song of praise attributed to King David. It celebrates God’s triumph over His enemies and His care for His people. The psalm recalls God’s mighty acts, including the deliverance from Egypt and the choice of Jerusalem as His dwelling place. In this setting, the psalmist looks beyond Israel’s history to a future time when foreign nations will honor God.

The phrase “Princes shall come out of Egypt” points to a nation once known for oppression. It may mean that Egyptian nobles will leave their land and take part in God’s purposes, or that Egypt itself will turn toward God and produce leaders who honor Him. “Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God” refers to Cush, the region south of Egypt. The psalmist declares that this distant people will recognize God’s supremacy and reach out to Him. Stretching out hands is a gesture of prayer, submission, and offering to God. This action shows humility and dependence, not mere curiosity.

These images together show the universal reach of God’s salvation. Egypt and Ethiopia represent nations far from Israel, yet God promises to draw them to Himself. This prophecy looks ahead to the spread of the Gospel, fulfilled in the New Testament era when the Church includes believers from every nation. The following verses in Psalm 68 call all kingdoms of the earth to sing praise to God, confirming that His reign extends beyond Israel. Even nations historically opposed to or distant from God’s people are invited to worship Him.

For believers, this verse encourages prayer for the nations, especially those that seem distant or resistant. It also calls for active participation in missions that proclaim salvation to all peoples, regardless of background or nationality. God’s redemptive plan reaches the ends of the earth, and His people are invited to share that hope. When we pray for the spread of the Gospel, we join in the work that this verse announces.

Psalm 68:31 is a prophetic promise that even powerful, distant nations will acknowledge God. It reveals His longing for every people to worship Him and assures us that no nation lies beyond His grace. This hope should shape how we see the world and how we pray.
