1 Chronicles 13:6

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

And Dauid went vp, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-iearim, which belonged to Iudah, to bring vp thence the Arke of God the Lord, that dwelleth betweene the Cherubims, whose name is called on it. 1 Chronicles 13:6 (KJV)

that is, to Kirjath-jearim, which

belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the LORD, that dwelleth

between the cherubims, whose name is called

on it. 1 Chronicles 13:6 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of King David’s attempt to bring the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem. To fully understand its significance, we must explore the context and unpack its deeper meaning.

In this chapter David has become king of Israel and desires to bring the Ark of God to Jerusalem, the newly established capital of the nation. The Ark of the Covenant was a sacred container that held the stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments, symbolising God’s presence and His covenant with the Israelites.

The verse describes how David and all Israel journeyed to Baalah, also known as Kirjath‑jearim, which lay in the territory of Judah. Their purpose was to retrieve the Ark from its current location and bring it to Jerusalem, where David intended to build a house for it.

Notably, the Ark was the central symbol of God’s presence among His people. It was kept in the Most Holy Place of the Tabernacle, situated between two golden cherubim, and the name of the Lord was associated with it. Thus, when the verse says that God’s name is called on the Ark, it underscores the Ark’s holiness.

David’s desire to bring the Ark to Jerusalem reflects his deep reverence and commitment to honouring God. He understood that having the Ark in the capital would represent God’s presence and serve as a focal point for worship and spiritual guidance for the nation.

However, the subsequent events reveal that David’s approach to relocating the Ark was flawed. The people placed the Ark on a new cart instead of carrying it according to the prescribed method in the Law of Moses. This deviation led to tragedy when Uzza, one of the men transporting the Ark, touched it to steady it as the oxen stumbled and was struck dead by God’s wrath.

This incident teaches the importance of following God’s commands and approaching Him with reverence and respect. It reminds us that we cannot manipulate or trivialise God’s holiness for our own purposes; rather, we should honour Him in accordance with His Word and submit to His divine will.

In summary, 1 Chronicles 13:6 highlights David’s intent to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, emphasizing the importance of God’s presence among His people and the need to approach God with obedience rather than relying on our own understanding.
