1 Chronicles 16:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek also his face continually.”

Context:First Chronicles is a book in the Old Testament that primarily focuses on the history of Israel, particularly the reign of King David. Chapter 16 contains a song of thanksgiving composed by David after the ark of the covenant was brought to Jerusalem and placed in a tent David had prepared for it.

“Seek the LORD” The word “seek” implies an active pursuit and a desire to find or discover something. In this case, it refers to seeking a relationship with the LORD, the one true God. Seeking the LORD involves desiring to know Him, His will, and His ways. It implies seeking Him with humility, reverence, and a genuine heart.

“and his strength” God’s strength refers to His power and might. It encompasses His ability to deliver, protect, and provide for His people. When we seek God’s strength, we acknowledge our own limitations and rely on His supernatural power to sustain us in all circumstances. It also involves recognizing that our strength is insufficient, and we need His strength to accomplish His purposes.

“seek his face continually” To seek God’s face means to seek His presence, His favour, and His intimacy. It is a metaphorical expression that represents desiring an ongoing relationship with Him. Seeking God’s face continually implies a lifestyle of seeking Him, not just a one-time event. It involves consistently seeking His guidance, wisdom, and fellowship in our daily lives.

  • Relationship with God:This verse emphasises the importance of having a personal and continuous relationship with God. It encourages us to seek Him, not just His blessings or assistance. Our primary focus should be on knowing and loving God Himself.
  • Dependency on God:Recognising our own limitations and relying on God’s strength is crucial. As we seek God, we acknowledge that we need His supernatural power to overcome challenges, face difficulties, and fulfil our purpose. Our reliance on His strength demonstrates our trust in Him.
  • Consistency and Perseverance:“Seek his face continually” reminds us to maintain an ongoing pursuit of God. It is not a one-time event but a lifelong journey of seeking Him, growing in our relationship with Him, and aligning our lives with His will. It calls us to be consistent in seeking God’s presence and guidance in all areas of life.
  • Worship and Thanksgiving:The context of this verse, as part of a song of thanksgiving by David, highlights the importance of worshiping and praising God. Seeking the LORD and His strength is intricately tied to a heart of gratitude, acknowledging God’s faithfulness, and offering Him praise.
