1 Chronicles 16:12

Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

1 Chronicles 16:12 (KJV)

This verse comes from a psalm of thanksgiving that David gave to Asaph and his fellow musicians when the ark of the covenant was brought to Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 16:7-36). The people had witnessed God’s power and faithfulness, and this song called them to respond with praise. The call to remember was central to Israel’s worship, helping each generation trust the God who had acted for them.

The command to remember is more than a mental exercise; it is a deliberate act of faith. “Marvellous works” points to God’s mighty acts of deliverance, such as rescuing Israel from Egypt. “Wonders” describes supernatural events that show God’s power over nature and history. “Judgments of his mouth” refers to God’s spoken decrees and righteous laws, which guide His people in holy living.

These three belong together. God’s works reveal His character, and His words direct His people. To remember one without the other is incomplete. His deeds inspire trust, while His judgments teach obedience. Remembrance is not merely intellectual; it is a spiritual discipline that strengthens faith and gratitude.

The wording closely matches Psalm 105:5, showing that this call to remembrance was used in Israel’s worship. For Christians, remembering God’s past faithfulness also points to His greatest work in Christ, though this verse itself focuses on God’s dealings with Israel. The verse implies that God’s acts and words are inseparable: His works demonstrate His character, and His words guide His people.

Make remembrance a daily habit. Rehearse specific ways God has helped you, and let those memories strengthen your faith. In corporate worship and personal devotion, recall His deeds and obey His commands. This practice anchors trust in God’s proven faithfulness. As you remember, you also prepare your heart to face new trials with confidence in the same God.

What has God done that you have forgotten? Take time to thank Him for His wonders and to submit again to His judgments. Let your memory of His past care shape your trust for today.
