1 Chronicles 22:18
Is not the Lord your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the Lord, and before his people.
1 Chronicles 22:18 (KJV)
Context
David spoke these words near the end of his life, as he charged Israel’s leaders to support Solomon in building the temple. David had gathered materials for the house of God, though God had told him he would not build it because he was a man of war. The people now stood at a turning point, ready to begin the work.
Meaning
David’s question “Is not the LORD your God with you?” reminds the people that God’s presence is the foundation of their confidence. His second question points to the rest God had given them from enemies on every side. This rest was not for idleness but for the sacred task of building a place for God’s name. The land being subdued before the LORD and his people shows that victory came from God, not from their own strength. God’s presence and provision are the basis for obedience and for undertaking the work He has given.
Biblical connections
This charge echoes God’s promise to Israel that he would give them rest from their enemies, as in Deuteronomy 12:10. That rest prepared them to worship God in the place he would choose. Here, the rest prepared them to build the temple. God’s past faithfulness becomes the reason for present obedience and service.
Application
Believers today can recognize God’s presence in their own lives, especially when facing new responsibilities. The rest God gives is not merely comfort; it is an opportunity to serve his purposes. When we see how God has subdued obstacles and granted peace, we can move forward with confidence in the work he has given us. Recognize God’s past faithfulness as motivation for present and future service.
Reflection
Consider the rest God has provided in your life. Has he given you peace on every side? That peace is a gift, but it also carries a call. Like Israel, we are not saved to sit still but to build something for God’s glory. Let his presence and provision stir you to faithful action.
