1 Chronicles 28:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch, and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper chambers thereof, and of the inner parlours thereof, and of the place of the mercy seat”

Context:Before we dive into the specific verse, it’s important to understand the context of 1 Chronicles 28. This chapter records David’s charge to Solomon, his son and successor, regarding the construction of the temple in Jerusalem. David had desired to build the temple himself, but God chose Solomon for this task. In 1 Chronicles 28, David addresses Solomon and the assembly of leaders, priests, and officials to provide instructions and encouragement.

Giving the pattern:In this verse, David gives Solomon a detailed description or pattern of the temple’s structure. David had received divine inspiration and guidance regarding the temple, and now he passes it on to Solomon. The structure mentioned includes various parts of the temple such as the porch, the houses, the treasuries, the upper chambers, the inner parlors, and the place of the mercy seat. This emphasizes the meticulous planning and attention to detail that went into the temple’s construction.

David’s role:David had a strong desire to build a house for the Lord, but God did not allow him to do so because he was a man of war and had shed much blood (1 Chronicles 28:3). However, David played a significant role in preparing for the temple’s construction. He gathered materials, made arrangements, and provided Solomon with the necessary instructions and patterns. Although he couldn’t physically build the temple, he did everything he could to ensure its success.

Symbolic significance:The temple was a central place of worship and symbolized the presence of God among His people. By giving Solomon the pattern and instructions for the temple’s construction, David was passing on the responsibility of continuing God’s work and maintaining the covenant relationship between God and Israel. It also symbolized the continuity and succession of the royal line. David’s actions demonstrated his commitment to God and his desire to honor Him through the construction of the temple.

While the temple holds specific historical and theological significance, there are several practical lessons we can learn from this verse. Firstly, it highlights the importance of passing on knowledge and wisdom to the next generation. David ensured that Solomon had all the necessary information and instructions to accomplish the task at hand. Similarly, as believers, we should strive to pass on our faith, values, and teachings to the next generation.

Secondly, the attention to detail and careful planning demonstrated by David is a valuable lesson. When we undertake any task or project, it is important to approach it with diligence and thoughtfulness. We should seek God’s guidance and make every effort to execute our plans with excellence.

Finally, David’s humility is evident in this passage. Despite his desire to build the temple, he recognized God’s sovereignty and accepted His decision. David was willing to support and empower the next generation to fulfill God’s purposes, even if it meant he couldn’t accomplish it himself. This teaches us the importance of humility and accepting God’s plans for our lives.

In conclusion, 1 Chronicles 28:11 showcases David’s preparation for the construction of the temple and the passing on of the pattern and instructions to Solomon. It highlights the attention to detail, the transfer of responsibility, and the symbolic significance of the temple. Additionally, it provides practical lessons for us, such as the importance of passing on knowledge, careful planning, and humility in accepting God’s will.
