1 Chronicles 29:20

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

“And David said to all the congregation, Now bless the LORD your God. And all the congregation blessed the LORD God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshipped the LORD, and the king”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles provides a historical account of Israel’s kings and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty. In chapter 29, King David is making preparations for the construction of the temple, and he calls the people to contribute generously for this purpose.

Blessing the LORD:In this verse, David urges the congregation to bless the Lord their God. Blessing the Lord involves acknowledging His greatness, goodness, and sovereignty. It is an act of worship and praise directed towards God.

Congregational worship:The response of the people is described as a collective act of worship. They blessed the Lord, bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord and the king. This emphasizes the unity and reverence displayed by the people as they acknowledge both God’s authority and the role of their earthly king.

Recognition of God’s sovereignty:By calling the people to bless the Lord, David reminds them of God’s sovereignty over their lives and the entire nation. It acknowledges that all blessings and provisions come from God alone.

Reverence and worship:The people’s response to David’s exhortation demonstrates their reverence and worship towards God. Bowing their heads and worshipping signifies humility and submission before the Lord. It reflects their acknowledgment of His authority and their dependence on Him.

David’s role:It’s noteworthy that the verse mentions both the Lord and the king. David, as the king of Israel, was chosen by God and anointed to lead the nation. The people’s act of worship towards the king, alongside their worship of God, acknowledges David’s position as a leader appointed by God.
