1 Chronicles 29:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

And they sacrificed sacrifices vnto the Lord, & offered burnt offerings vnto the Lord on the morrow after that day, euen a thousand bullockes, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambes, with their drinke offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel: 1 Chronicles 29:21 (KJV)

This verse concludes the larger passage in 1 Chronicles 29 that records King David’s extensive preparations for the building of the temple in Jerusalem. David had organized a nationwide call for voluntary contributions, and the people responded with generous gifts that were to support the future house of worship. Verse 21 presents the climax of that collective effort—a grand, communal sacrifice that involved both animal and grain offerings.

Sacrifices and Offerings

The text highlights a multitude of offerings: burnt offerings, grain offerings, fellowship offerings, drink offerings, and sacrifices of thanksgiving. In addition, the people presented a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, each accompanied by its appropriate drink offering. Such sacrifices were central to Old‑Testament worship, symbolising the nation’s devotion, reliance on God, and desire to honor Him. The abundance of the offerings reflects the generosity of Israel and David’s desire that the worship be comprehensive and inclusive.

Timing of the Sacrifice

The sacrifices were carried out on the day following a significant gathering that marked the public acknowledgment of Solomon as David’s successor and the celebratory atmosphere that accompanied David’s call for contributions. The timing underscores the gratitude and celebration attached to the transition of leadership and the continuation of God’s plan through Solomon.

Abundance for All Israel

The offerings were made “in abundance for all Israel,” indicating that the worship was intended to benefit the entire nation. By providing such a large quantity of sacrifices, David ensured that the blessings of God would be shared throughout the community, reinforcing the collective nature of Israel’s devotion.

Broader Context

The whole chapter centers on the voluntary gifts given for the temple’s construction and David’s prayer of praise. It offers insight into David’s deep commitment to God, his willingness to lay a spiritual foundation for future generations, and his example of generous giving. The passage serves as a model for believers to contribute to the work of God’s kingdom with gratitude and communal unity.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 29:21 underscores the importance of sacrifices, offerings, and worship in the Old Testament, while highlighting themes of gratitude, communal participation, and unified devotion among the people of Israel.
