1 Chronicles 5:18
The sons of Reuben, and the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh, of valiant men, men able to bear buckler and sword, and to shoot with bow, and skilful in war, were four and forty thousand seven hundred and threescore, that went out to the war.
1 Chronicles 5:18 (KJV)
Context
1 Chronicles is a historical book of the Old Testament. It retells Israel’s story after the exile, focusing on genealogies and the nation’s heritage. This verse records a military census of the tribes that settled east of the Jordan River: Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh. Their location on the frontier made their strength especially important for the whole nation.
Meaning
The verse lists 44,760 warriors described as “valiant men.” They were able to bear the buckler, a small shield, and the sword, and to shoot with the bow. This shows they were trained for both close combat and ranged attack. The phrase “skilful in war” emphasizes their readiness and discipline, not just their courage. Their equipment was standard for that time, and their number shows a substantial fighting force.
Biblical connections
These tribes lived on the frontier, so their military strength was vital for defending the whole nation. Their unity in a common cause reflects the broader calling of Israel to stand together as God’s people. The listing of the tribes together underscores their shared purpose.
Application
God values readiness and skill in serving His purposes. Just as these warriors prepared themselves for battle, believers are called to develop their gifts and be prepared to act when God calls. Their willingness to “go out to the war” reminds us that faith involves active participation, not passive observation.
Reflection
This verse does not praise war for its own sake. It records the strength of a people committed to protecting what God had given them. In the same way, we are to guard what is precious—our families, our faith, and our calling—with courage and skill, trusting God to fight with us.
