1 Chronicles 6:77
Unto the rest of the children of Merari were given out of the tribe of Zebulun, Rimmon with her suburbs, Tabor with her suburbs:
1 Chronicles 6:77 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to a careful record of cities given to the Levites, the tribe set apart for service to God. The Merarites were one of the three main Levitical families, and they received twelve cities in all (1 Chronicles 6:63). Here, the rest of the Merarites are given two cities from the tribe of Zebulun: Rimmon and Tabor, each with its suburbs, or pasturelands.
Unlike the other tribes, Levi received no large territory. The Lord Himself was their inheritance. The Merarites had carried the heavy frames and pillars of the tabernacle during the wilderness journeys. Now, settled in the land, they needed places to live and land to feed their families. The provision of cities and pastures ensured they could live among the people and fulfill their duties.
Meaning
The word “suburbs” means open pastureland around each city. This was not a small yard but enough ground for grazing livestock and growing food. God made sure His servants had practical provision, not just a place to sleep. The cities were spread among the tribes so that Levites could teach the Law and lead worship close to every Israelite.
Rimmon and Tabor were real towns in Zebulun. Tabor likely stood near Mount Tabor, a well-known landmark. These were not symbolic names but actual places where families lived, worked, and served. The detailed list shows that God cared about the daily needs of those who ministered before Him. This allocation demonstrates God’s care for those who served Him, ensuring they had a place to live and resources to sustain themselves.
Biblical connections
The same distribution appears in Joshua 21:34-35, confirming that this arrangement was carried out. The Levites’ lack of land inheritance is stated clearly in Numbers 18:20, where the Lord tells Aaron, “I am thy part and thine inheritance.” This verse in 1 Chronicles shows how that promise took practical shape. The community supported the Levites so they could devote themselves to spiritual duties. The inclusion of pasturelands was essential for the Levites’ livestock and daily sustenance, as they did not receive a territorial inheritance like the other tribes.
Application
Zebulun gave up part of its inheritance for the Merarites. This teaches mutual care within God’s people. Those who minister in spiritual things are to be supported by the community. When believers provide for pastors, teachers, and missionaries, they honor the Lord and help His truth continue. Material blessings are entrusted to us, not for ourselves alone, but for the good of the whole body. The principle that those who minister in spiritual things are to be supported by the community is clear here.
Reflection
God’s provision for the Merarites was both spiritual and practical. He did not forget their need for food, shelter, and land. This same God cares for His servants today. He works through the generosity of His people to meet needs and sustain His work. The record of Rimmon and Tabor reminds us that faithful service and faithful support belong together in the covenant community. The detailed record of these cities reflects the orderly and intentional nature of God’s provision for His people.
