“And on the other side Jordan by Jericho, on the east side of Jordan, were given them out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer in the wilderness with her suburbs, and Jahzah with her suburbs,”

The Inheritance of the Levites

In the division of the Promised Land, the tribe of Levi was not given a contiguous, bordered territory like the other tribes. Because the Lord Himself was their inheritance, the Levites were given specific cities scattered throughout the territories of their brethren, along with the surrounding pasturelands (suburbs) to accommodate their flocks and herds. This intentional dispersion served a vital spiritual purpose. By placing Levites in every region, God ensured that spiritual leadership, instruction in His Law, and guidance in proper worship were accessible to all Israelites, regardless of where they lived.

Provision from the Tribe of Reuben

This verse details a portion of the Levitical allotment provided by the tribe of Reuben. Located on the high plateau east of the Jordan River, opposite the city of Jericho, the Reubenites willingly gave up several of their own cities to provide homes for the Levites. This act of giving highlights the shared responsibility of God's people in supporting ministry and the spiritual health of the nation.

Bezer: A Sanctuary in the Wilderness

The city of Bezer, situated "in the wilderness," is particularly significant. Beyond being a home for the Levites, Bezer had previously been designated as one of the six Cities of Refuge (Deuteronomy 4:43; Joshua 20:8). These cities formed a critical part of Israel's justice system, providing a legally recognized sanctuary for anyone who committed accidental manslaughter. An individual fleeing the vengeance of the victim's family could find safe harbor within Bezer until a fair trial was held.

The selection of Bezer illustrates that God's justice and mercy reached the farthest borders of the nation. It provided a balanced approach to law, prioritizing fair trials over immediate retaliation. For believers today, the provision of a City of Refuge beautifully foreshadows the ultimate sanctuary found in God Himself. Just as the Israelites were provided with literal places of safety to escape judgment, we find our refuge and covering from the penalty of sin through His abundant grace.
