Context

This verse belongs to a longer list of cities given to the Levites, the tribe set apart for service to God. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no single block of land. Ramoth in Gilead and Mahanaim were more than names on a map. Ramoth served as one of the six cities of refuge, where someone who had killed another by accident could flee for safety from the avenger of blood until a fair trial (Joshua 20:8). Mahanaim carried older memory: Jacob named it “two camps” after meeting the angels of God there (Genesis 32:1-2). Both cities, with their suburbs, supported the Levites’ livestock and daily needs. The pasturelands were not an afterthought; they were essential for the Levites to sustain their families and animals.

The parallel list in Joshua 21:38-39 confirms that Ramoth was a city of refuge and that Mahanaim also had its suburbs. This shows the careful planning behind the Levites’ provision. When David fled from Absalom, he found shelter at Mahanaim, where Barzillai and others brought food and supplies to refresh him and his men. He is the same God who sees our needs and prepares provision in advance.
