1 Chronicles 8:40

And the sons of Ulam were mighty men of valour, archers, and had many sons, and sons’ sons, an hundred and fifty. All these are of the sons of Benjamin.

1 Chronicles 8:40 (KJV)

1 Chronicles records the family lines of Israel, with special attention to Judah and the priests. This verse belongs to the genealogy of Benjamin, preserving the names and numbers of its people for future generations. Such records helped the returning exiles confirm their identity and heritage.

The sons of Ulam are called mighty men of valour, archers, and they had many sons and grandsons, totaling one hundred and fifty. The phrase mighty men of valour points to strength and bravery in battle. Archers shows their skill with the bow, a weapon that required training and discipline. The large number of descendants highlights the blessing of fruitfulness and the continuation of the family line. This verse, though a simple list, shows that each family is part of the larger story of God’s people.

Benjaminite warriors appear elsewhere in Scripture as daring fighters. This reputation for courage and skill is consistent with the tribe’s history, especially during the era of the judges and the early monarchy. The genealogical record itself reflects God’s care for every family within His covenant people. It also reminds readers that God keeps His promises across generations.

This verse reminds readers that God values each person and family, even those mentioned only in a list. Strength and skill are gifts to be developed and used for His purposes. Faithfulness in one generation can bless many descendants, as seen in the large number of sons and grandsons. Consider how your own abilities can serve God’s community today.

Consider how your own family and abilities fit into God’s larger story. The record of Ulam’s descendants encourages believers to take seriously their heritage and to pass on a legacy of faith and courage to the next generation. God sees and values every faithful life, even when human records do not mention it.
