“For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.”

Context:Let’s dive into a Bible study on 1 Corinthians 14:2, which is found in the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. This verse is part of a larger passage where the apostle Paul addresses the Corinthians regarding the use of spiritual gifts, particularly the gift of speaking in tongues and prophecy.

First, let’s read the verse in question:

“For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” (1 Corinthians 14:2, KJV)

In this verse, Paul makes a distinction between speaking in an “unknown tongue” or language and speaking to men. Here are a few key points to consider in this verse:

1. Speaking in an unknown tongue: The phrase “unknown tongue” refers to speaking in a language that is not understood by those present. This could be a human language that is unfamiliar to the listeners or even a heavenly or angelic language. The focus is on a form of communication that is not intelligible to the audience.

2. Speaking to God: Paul states that when someone speaks in an unknown tongue, they are not addressing men but speaking to God. This suggests that speaking in tongues is a means of personal communication with God. It is a form of prayer or worship directed towards God, expressing the speaker’s heart and spirit.

3. Lack of understanding: Paul highlights that when someone speaks in an unknown tongue, no one understands them. The purpose of verbal communication is to convey information or meaning to others, but in this case, the message remains unintelligible to the listeners.

4. Speaking mysteries in the spirit: Despite the lack of understanding, Paul acknowledges that when a person speaks in an unknown tongue, they are speaking mysteries “in the spirit.” This suggests that the speaker is engaging in a spiritual form of communication that goes beyond human comprehension. It involves a direct connection with the Holy Spirit, expressing deep spiritual truths or insights that are hidden to human understanding.

It’s essential to note that the context of this passage is the regulation of spiritual gifts in the Corinthian church. Paul emphasizes the importance of using gifts in an orderly and edifying manner, with a focus on building up the church and promoting understanding among believers. In the following verses, Paul discusses the value of prophecy over speaking in tongues in the corporate setting, as prophecy benefits the entire congregation by providing understandable revelation and edification.
