“1 Corinthians 14:3 (KJV): But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of 1 Corinthians where the apostle Paul addresses the issue of spiritual gifts and their appropriate use in the church. In this specific verse, Paul focuses on the gift of prophecy and highlights its purpose and desired outcomes.

Prophecy:The verse begins by stating, “But he that prophesieth…” Prophecy refers to a spiritual gift whereby individuals receive messages or insights from God to be shared with others. It involves speaking forth God’s word under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Prophecy can include revealing God’s will, proclaiming His truth, foretelling future events, or simply speaking God’s heart and intentions to His people.

Edification:The first outcome mentioned in the verse is edification. Paul states that when someone prophesies, they speak “unto men to edification.” Edification means to build up, encourage, or strengthen others spiritually. Prophecy should contribute to the growth and development of individuals and the overall spiritual health of the church. It should bring enlightenment, instruction, and conviction that lead to transformation and deeper faith.

Exhortation:The second outcome mentioned is exhortation. Paul states that prophecy involves speaking “unto men to… exhortation.” Exhortation means to urge, counsel, or motivate. When someone prophesies, they should provide guidance, encouragement, and practical application of God’s word. Prophecy should challenge believers to align their lives with God’s truth, to persevere in faith, and to live in a manner worthy of their calling.

Comfort:The third outcome mentioned is comfort. Paul states that prophecy involves speaking “unto men to… comfort.” Comfort here refers to consolation, reassurance, and solace. Prophecy should bring hope, peace, and encouragement in times of difficulty, pain, or uncertainty. It reminds believers of God’s faithfulness, His promises, and His presence in their lives, offering them comfort and strength to overcome trials.

In summary, 1 Corinthians 14:3 teaches us that the purpose of prophecy is not to exalt the individual but to benefit others. Prophecy should edify, exhort, and comfort the hearers. It should build up their faith, provide guidance, and bring them comfort in their journey with God.

Please note that interpretations of Bible verses may vary among different individuals and denominations, and it is always beneficial to study Scripture in its broader context and seek additional insights from trusted biblical resources.
