1 Corinthians 16:18

For they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such.

Context

Paul closes his first letter to the Corinthians with practical exhortations. In the preceding verse, he names Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus as the ones who had visited him. Their presence and the news they brought from Corinth refreshed Paul’s spirit and, through that, the Corinthians’ as well.

Meaning

The Greek word translated “refreshed” (anapauō) means to give rest, relief, or renewal. These men did not merely pass along information; their Christian character and conversation brought genuine encouragement to Paul. The command “acknowledge ye them that are such” is not a passive feeling but an active duty. The church is to recognize, appreciate, and honor those who faithfully serve and refresh others.
