1 Corinthians 3:11

“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Context: The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthians to address various issues and challenges the church was facing. In Chapter 3, he addresses the problem of divisions within the church and the need for spiritual maturity among believers.

The verse emphasizes the centrality of Jesus Christ as the foundation of the Christian faith. Just as a building needs a solid foundation to stand firm, our faith in Christ must be the basis of our spiritual life. All other foundations are inadequate and cannot provide the stability and security that Christ offers.

1. Foundation of our faith: The verse states that “no man can lay” any other foundation. This highlights the exclusivity of Jesus Christ as the one and only foundation for salvation and spiritual life. It signifies that there is no other means or person by which we can be reconciled to God or receive eternal life apart from Jesus Christ.

In other parts of the Bible, Jesus is referred to as the cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20; 1 Peter 2:6). The cornerstone was the primary stone used in ancient construction, and it played a crucial role in determining the alignment and stability of the entire building. Jesus Christ is the cornerstone upon which the entire spiritual edifice of the Church is built. He is the one who unites believers and provides the necessary structure and coherence to the body of Christ.

2. Uniqueness of Jesus Christ: Understanding that Jesus Christ is the foundation of our faith has several implications for believers. It reminds us to:

• a. Place Christ at the center of our lives: We need to prioritise our relationship with Jesus above all else. He should be the focus of our worship, devotion, and obedience.
• b. Reject other false foundations: The verse implies that any other foundation we try to build upon will ultimately fail. This includes relying on our own works, traditions, human wisdom, or anything that detracts from Christ’s finished work on the cross. We must be cautious not to place our faith in anything or anyone other than Jesus.
• c. Seek spiritual growth in Christ: Since Christ is the foundation, we need to deepen our understanding of Him through studying the Scriptures, prayer, and fellowship with other believers. As we grow in our knowledge and relationship with Christ, our faith becomes more secure and our lives are transformed.
• d. Foster unity within the Church: Recognising Christ as the common foundation helps us to maintain unity within the body of Christ. Regardless of our differences, we are all built upon the same foundation. This should motivate us to love, support, and encourage one another, promoting unity and cooperation within the Church.
