1 Corinthians 3:14
If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
1 Corinthians 3:14 (KJV)
Context
Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to address divisions and spiritual immaturity in the Corinthian church. In chapter 3, he uses the metaphor of a building to teach about the foundation of Christian life and the quality of each believer’s work. He states that Jesus Christ is the only foundation (1 Corinthians 3:11), and that each person builds on that foundation with their actions, service, and ministry. The immediate context (verses 10-15) describes how each builder’s work will be tested on the Day of judgment by fire, and verse 14 promises a reward for work that endures.
Meaning
The phrase “If any man’s work abide” refers to the lasting quality of a believer’s service. Paul is not speaking about salvation, but about the results of faithful labor. The work that “abides” is built with enduring materials—gold, silver, precious stones—which represent sound doctrine and faithful living, rather than wood, hay, or straw, which represent shallow or worthless efforts. The phrase “which he hath built thereupon” emphasizes personal responsibility: each believer is accountable for how they build on the foundation of Christ. The promise “he shall receive a reward” assures that God will evaluate the quality of each person’s work and reward those whose service endures. This reward is distinct from salvation, which is a free gift of grace; it is an additional recognition for faithful service.
Biblical connections
The following verse, 1 Corinthians 3:15, clarifies that even if a person’s work is burned up, they themselves will be saved, “yet so as by fire.” This shows that salvation is secure through faith in Christ, but believers are still accountable for how they build. Paul also connects the reward to one’s own labor in 1 Corinthians 3:8, where he says each will receive according to their own work. This passage does not teach that salvation can be lost, but that there are degrees of reward in heaven based on faithful service.
Application
Evaluate your work: Reflect on your actions and service to God. Are you investing in activities that have lasting spiritual impact? Are you building on the foundation of Christ? Examine your motives and seek to align your work with God’s purposes.
Pursue excellence in your service: Strive for quality and faithfulness in your work for the Lord. Avoid merely going through the motions or seeking recognition from others. Seek to please God above all else and let His standards guide your actions.
Trust in God’s rewards: Remember that God sees and values your labor. Even if you face challenges, discouragement, or lack of recognition in this world, trust that God will reward your faithful service in due time. Let this hope motivate you to persevere and continue to serve Him wholeheartedly.
Reflection
The promise of reward is not meant to be the sole motivation for serving God, but it can encourage believers to live purposefully and invest in eternal values. Knowing that God will honor faithful efforts gives strength to persevere in calling, even when results are not immediately visible. This verse calls us to build with care, knowing that our work will be tested and that God is just to reward what endures.
