1 Corinthians 6:2

Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?

1 Corinthians 6:2 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to address divisions and disorders in the Corinthian church. In this passage, he confronts believers who were taking their disputes before secular courts instead of resolving them within the Christian community. His opening question, “Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world?” is a rhetorical reminder of their high calling and future role.

Paul’s argument moves from the greater to the lesser. If the saints—believers in Christ—are destined to judge the world when Christ returns and establishes His kingdom, then they are certainly competent to judge “the smallest matters” of daily life. The Greek phrase for “smallest matters” refers to trivial disputes and lawsuits, often over property or similar issues. Paul’s point is that Christians possess the wisdom and discernment needed to settle such controversies among themselves, and they should not need to appeal to unbelieving judges.

This future judgment is confirmed elsewhere in Scripture. In Matthew 19:28, Jesus tells His disciples that they will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel, and Revelation 20:4 describes saints who will reign with Christ in judgment. These passages reinforce the dignity and responsibility of believers: they are being prepared for a cosmic role in God’s redemptive plan.

Because believers are destined to judge the world, they are called to develop spiritual maturity now. This means growing in wisdom, seeking unity, and handling conflicts with the discernment that the Holy Spirit provides. By resolving disputes within the body of Christ, the church reflects the future reality of believers judging the world and safeguards its testimony before unbelievers.

This verse is a call to live in light of our future role. If we are to share in Christ’s judgment of the world, we must not shrink from the smaller responsibilities of discernment and reconciliation today. Let us embrace the wisdom God gives through His Spirit, so that we may honor Him in both great and small matters.
