1 Corinthians 7:34

“There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.”

Context:The apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthian church to address various issues and questions they had regarding marriage, singleness, and Christian living. In Chapter 7, Paul provides instructions and advice regarding marriage, celibacy, and the pursuit of godliness.

Difference between a wife and a virgin:Paul begins by highlighting the distinction between a wife (married woman) and a virgin (unmarried woman). He acknowledges that the two have different responsibilities and priorities in life.

Unmarried woman’s focus:The unmarried woman, who has devoted herself to the Lord and chosen to remain single, is free to devote her time and energy to “the things of the Lord.” She can focus on growing in her relationship with God, pursuing holiness, and serving Him without the added responsibilities and concerns of marriage.

Holiness in body and spirit:Paul emphasizes that the unmarried woman’s dedication to the Lord extends to both her body and spirit. This means that she seeks to live a life that is set apart for God, avoiding sinful behaviours and pursuing purity in her thoughts, actions, and relationships.

Married woman’s focus:In contrast, the woman who is married has additional responsibilities. Her primary concern is how she can please her husband and fulfil her marital duties. This does not mean that she neglects her spiritual life, but her attention is divided between her relationship with God and her obligations as a wife.

Balancing spiritual and marital responsibilities:Paul’s intention is not to diminish the importance of marriage or imply that it hinders a person’s spiritual growth. Rather, he acknowledges the reality that married individuals have additional obligations and concerns that can potentially distract them from wholeheartedly pursuing spiritual matters. It is important for married individuals to find a balance between their relationship with God and their responsibilities as a spouse.

Application:This verse encourages believers to consider their life circumstances and make choices that will enable them to prioritise their relationship with God. For those who are single, it emphasises the opportunity to devote themselves fully to God’s work. For those who are married, it underscores the importance of maintaining a strong spiritual foundation while fulfilling their marital responsibilities.

  • Overall:1 Corinthians 7:34 highlights the different priorities and responsibilities of married and unmarried individuals in relation to their pursuit of holiness and their commitment to the Lord. It serves as a reminder to seek God’s wisdom in all aspects of life, whether single or married, and to prioritise a relationship with Him above all else.
