1 Corinthians 7:8

I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I.

1 Corinthians 7:8 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to address various issues and questions raised by the church in Corinth. In chapter 7, he discusses marriage and singleness, responding to the Corinthians’ concerns with practical guidance.

Paul addresses the unmarried and widows, saying it is good for them to remain unmarried as he is. The phrase “I say therefore” signals that this is Paul’s personal judgment, not a direct command from the Lord. He presents his own singleness as a contented example, not as a universal rule.

Paul’s statement is advice, not a command. He does not say it is sinful to marry again. Rather, he affirms that remaining single is good, while acknowledging that marriage is also honourable and permissible. The immediate context shows Paul’s balanced approach: singleness is good, but not for everyone. In the following verse, he acknowledges that those who cannot exercise self-control should marry.

Paul’s broader teaching in this chapter explains that singleness can be beneficial for undivided devotion to the Lord, but marriage is also a valid calling. Both states are honourable, and believers should seek to serve the Lord faithfully in whatever state they are in.

  • Singleness is a valid and good option: Paul presents it as a commendable choice for those who are unmarried or widowed, not as a lesser state.

  • Paul’s personal example: He points to his own singleness, indicating contentment and practical reasons for remaining single, such as dedicating himself fully to ministry.

  • Individual circumstances matter: Paul acknowledges diversity of personal situations and preferences, encouraging careful consideration of one’s own calling.

  • Pastoral concern: Paul’s specific address to the unmarried and widows shows his care for this group, offering guidance and support.

This verse encourages believers to view singleness and marriage as equally valid callings. It is not a rigid rule for all, but a wise word for those who are able to remain single. The key is to serve the Lord faithfully in whatever state one finds oneself, trusting that both paths can honour Him.
