For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.

Context

Paul writes this verse while answering questions from the Corinthian church about marriage and singleness. In the preceding verses, he addresses the temptation to sexual immorality and the mutual duties of husbands and wives. Here he turns to his own example, expressing a personal preference rather than issuing a command.

Paul begins by wishing that all believers were single as he was, so they could serve the Lord without the added cares of family life. Yet he immediately qualifies this wish: every person has received his own “proper gift of God.” The Greek word for gift is charisma, meaning a grace-gift. This indicates that both singleness and marriage are divine callings, not universal mandates. Paul does not impose his preference on others; he recognizes that God distributes different gifts to different people.

The immediate context in 1 Corinthians 7:8 suggests Paul was unmarried at the time of writing, and he values singleness for the undivided devotion it allows.
