1 John 1:5

“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”

Context:The book of 1 John was written by the apostle John to address various issues within the early Christian community. It emphasises the importance of fellowship with God and one another, the need to live in righteousness, and the assurance of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.

“This then is the message which we have heard of him and declare unto you”:John begins by stating that the message he is about to convey has been received from Jesus Christ Himself. As an eyewitness to Christ’s ministry, John was uniquely qualified to share this message.

“God is light”:John’s message centres around the nature and character of God. Here, he declares that God is light. Light often represents truth, purity, and righteousness in the Bible. This statement emphasises the holiness, wisdom, and moral perfection of God.

“And in him is no darkness at all”:The second part of the verse reinforces the previous statement. It signifies that God is completely devoid of darkness, which represents sin, evil, and falsehood. It suggests that God is entirely pure and incorruptible, without any trace of moral impurity or wrongdoing.
