But who so keepeth his word, in him verely is the loue of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 1 John 2:5 (KJV)

Context: The first letter of John, written by the apostle John to a group of believers, was intended to encourage them in their faith and to address various issues confronting the early Christian community. In this verse John stresses the vital connection between obeying God’s Word and the perfection of God’s love within the believer.

Keeping His Word: John begins with the phrase “whoso keepeth his word,” referring to those who faithfully obey and abide by God’s commandments and teachings. Keeping God’s Word is more than intellectual assent; it demands a lifestyle of obedience, living according to the principles revealed in Scripture.

Love of God Perfected: The apostle continues that in those who keep God’s Word, “the love of God [is] perfected.” This perfection of divine love is manifested in the believer’s life as a deepening relationship with God, where His love is made complete through faithful obedience. The love spoken of includes both God’s love for us and our love for Him, which grows stronger and matures as we walk in His commands.

Assurance of Being in Him: John concludes, “hereby know we that we are in him,” indicating that the obedience that perfects God’s love also provides assurance that we truly abide in Christ. Our obedience serves as evidence of our connection to Him and confirms our membership in His family.

Application: This passage urges believers to actively live out their faith by obeying God’s Word and allowing His love to work in and through them. It reminds us that love for God is not merely a feeling but is demonstrated through concrete actions and obedience to His commands. By doing so, we experience the fullness of God’s love and gain confident assurance of our relationship with Him.
