1 John 4:6
“We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.”
Context:The first epistle of John was written by the apostle John to a group of believers facing challenges from false teachers who denied Jesus’ divinity and teachings. John wrote to affirm the true Gospel and to encourage believers to discern between the spirit of truth (the Holy Spirit) and the spirit of error (false teachings and spirits).
Understanding the verse:
- “We are of God”:John is referring to himself and the apostles as those who belong to God, being appointed by Jesus to bear witness to the truth.
- “He that knoweth God heareth us”:Those who have a genuine relationship with God will listen to the teachings and testimonies of the apostles.
- “He that is not of God heareth not us”:Those who are not aligned with God or do not have a relationship with Him will reject the teachings of the apostles.
- “Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error”:John presents a criterion to distinguish between the spirit of truth (the Holy Spirit) and the spirit of error (false spirits and teachings). One’s response to the apostles’ teachings reveals their spiritual alignment.
- Key lessons:
- The importance of discernment:John emphasizes the need for discernment among believers. It is crucial to test the teachings and spirits by comparing them to the apostolic teachings found in Scripture.
- The role of the apostles:The apostles were appointed by Jesus and their teachings carry authority. Genuine believers will recognize and accept their teachings.
- The Spirit of truth:The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, guides believers into all truth (John 16:13). It is through the Holy Spirit that we can discern the truth and identify false teachings or spirits.
Application:
- Study the Scriptures:Develop a habit of studying and meditating on God’s Word to deepen your understanding and discernment.
- Seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit:Cultivate a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit through prayer and seeking His guidance in discerning truth.
- Be cautious of false teachings:Be vigilant and aware of false teachings that can lead you astray. Compare everything to the teachings of the apostles and the principles found in the Bible.
- Embrace sound doctrine:Hold fast to the teachings of the apostles and sound doctrine that aligns with the Word of God. Let it shape your beliefs and guide your actions.
Remember, this Bible study encourages you to dig deeper into God’s Word and apply its principles to your life. May you grow in discernment and truth as you study and seek God’s guidance.
