1 John 4:5

“They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.”

Context:The First Epistle of John was written by the apostle John to a community of believers to address various issues and encourage them in their faith. In this particular verse, John is warning the believers about false teachers who had infiltrated the church and were spreading deceptive teachings. John urges the believers to discern the spirits and test these false prophets.

Explanation and Commentary:“They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world.” This verse points to the fact that false teachers derive their worldview and message from the world rather than from God. Their teachings align with worldly values and desires, and they speak from a perspective that is contrary to the teachings of Christ. Instead of focusing on eternal truths and the Kingdom of God, they are preoccupied with worldly concerns, ambitions, and philosophies.

“and the world heareth them.” False teachers often find acceptance and an audience in the world. Their message resonates with those who are living in darkness and are distant from God’s truth. The world, which is characterised by sin and rebellion against God, is receptive to teachings that align with its values. This highlights the danger of being swayed by popular opinions or worldly ideologies instead of remaining rooted in the Word of God.

• Discernment:As believers, it is crucial to exercise discernment when listening to teachers and preachers. We must evaluate their teachings in light of God’s Word and ensure that they align with biblical principles. False teachers may present persuasive arguments, but if their teachings contradict the truths of the Gospel, we should be wary.
• Worldliness:We should be cautious about adopting worldly perspectives and values. The world’s ideologies are often at odds with the teachings of Christ. Our focus should be on seeking God’s truth and aligning our lives with His Word, rather than conforming to the patterns of this world.
• Rooted in the Word:To guard against deception, it is crucial to be firmly grounded in the Scriptures. Regular study of the Bible helps us develop a solid foundation of truth. This enables us to discern false teachings and recognise the voice of the Good Shepherd amidst the noise of the world.
• Witnessing:The fact that false teachers find an audience in the world reminds us of the importance of sharing the true Gospel message with others. As followers of Christ, we are called to be a light in the darkness, speaking the truth in love and pointing people to the saving grace of Jesus.
