1 John 4:7

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

Context

The apostle John wrote this letter to encourage and instruct early Christian communities. In the preceding verses, he warned believers to test spirits and discern truth from error (1 John 4:1-6). Now he returns to the theme of love, addressing his readers as “beloved” and calling them to a love that is rooted in God’s own nature.

Meaning

John’s command to love one another is not a suggestion but a foundational principle for Christian relationships. Love originates from God; it is an essential characteristic of His nature. God is the source and embodiment of love. Therefore, when believers love one another, they demonstrate the nature of God.

John also ties love to regeneration and knowledge of God. Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Genuine love is evidence of the new birth through faith in Christ and of a personal relationship with Him. This love is not mere human affection but a love rooted in God’s nature and demonstrated supremely in the sending of His Son (1 John 4:9).

Biblical connections

This command echoes Jesus’ teaching in John 13:34, where He instructs His disciples to love one another as He has loved them. The love John describes is therefore both a mark of true discipleship and a reflection of God’s own character.

Application

Believers are called to love one another because love comes from God. This love is an indication that we are born of God, and it deepens our knowledge of Him. In a world where false teaching abounds, Christians who are of God and on the side of truth should love one another and stand firm in the truth of the Gospel.
