1 John 5:2

“By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.”

Context:The First Epistle of John was written by the apostle John, likely towards the end of the first century. It was written to encourage and instruct believers in their faith, particularly addressing issues related to false teachings and the importance of love and obedience.

Understanding the verse:

  • Love for God’s children:The verse begins by emphasizing that we can know that we truly love the children of God. This refers to our fellow believers, the community of faith. Our love for them should be evident and observable in our actions and attitudes.
  • Love for God:The verse continues by stating that our love for God is demonstrated when we love His children. Our love for God should be reflected in our love for others, especially those who belong to the family of God.
  • Keeping God’s commandments:The verse concludes by highlighting the connection between our love for God and our obedience to His commandments. Loving God and keeping His commandments go hand in hand. True love for God will naturally result in a desire to obey His instructions.
  • Theological implications:
  • Love as evidence of salvation:John emphasizes the importance of love as evidence of genuine faith. Our love for God’s children is a visible sign that we truly belong to Him. It is through our love that others can witness the reality of our relationship with God.
  • Love and obedience:Love and obedience are inseparable in the Christian life. Love motivates and fuels our obedience to God’s commandments. It is not merely a sentimental feeling, but an active commitment to follow God’s will and live according to His Word.
  • Love as a mark of discipleship:Jesus Himself taught that love for one another would be a distinguishing mark of His disciples (John 13:35). John reiterates this principle, emphasizing that our love for fellow believers is a crucial aspect of our Christian identity.

Application:

  • Cultivate love for fellow believers:Let us actively seek ways to demonstrate love for our brothers and sisters in Christ. This includes showing kindness, offering help and support, and praying for one another. Our love should extend beyond words and be expressed through tangible actions.
  • Prioritize obedience to God’s commandments:Love for God should motivate us to obey His commandments. Let us strive to align our lives with His Word, seeking to live in obedience to His instructions. This includes not only the moral commands but also the teachings on love, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
  • Examine our love:Reflect on our love for others. Are there areas in our lives where we need to grow in love? Are there prejudices, grudges, or unforgiveness that hinder our love for fellow believers? Let us prayerfully ask God to help us love others genuinely and unconditionally.

Remember that 1 John 5:2 encourages us to demonstrate our love for God by loving His children and obeying His commandments. By doing so, we display the transformative power of God’s love in our lives and bear witness to our relationship with Him.
