1 Kings 10:10

And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices very great store, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.

1 Kings 10:10 (KJV)

This verse records the queen of Sheba’s gift to King Solomon during her visit to Jerusalem. She was a monarch from a distant land, often linked with modern-day Ethiopia or Yemen. She had heard of Solomon’s wisdom and came to test him with hard questions.

In this verse, the queen gives Solomon 120 talents of gold, a very great store of spices, and precious stones. A talent was an ancient unit of weight. One hundred twenty talents of gold was an enormous amount, roughly four and a half tons. Such a gift showed her wealth and her respect for the king.

The queen’s gifts were not mere payment or trade. They were a royal response to what she had seen and heard. She had tested Solomon with difficult questions, and he answered them all with wisdom. Her lavish presents acknowledged his superior understanding and the favor of God upon his reign.

The spices are singled out as unprecedented. The verse says that no such abundance of spices ever came again as what she gave. This highlights the extraordinary nature of her visit and the exceptional quality of her tribute. Gold, spices, and precious stones were the most valuable goods of the ancient world, and she brought them in abundance.

The visit of the queen of Sheba is part of the larger story of Solomon’s reign, which emphasizes his wisdom, wealth, and the peaceful prosperity of Israel under his rule. In 1 Kings 10:1-9, she praised Solomon’s wisdom and the blessed state of his servants. Her gifts were a fitting response to the wisdom she had witnessed, fulfilling the pattern of honor given to a king whom God had blessed.

This verse teaches that wisdom and godly character can draw recognition even from distant and powerful people. The queen did not come to flatter Solomon; she came to verify reports and then responded with honor. Believers today can learn that genuine wisdom, rooted in the fear of the Lord, earns respect and opens doors for testimony.

The queen’s generosity also reminds us that giving is a proper response to what we receive. She gave freely and lavishly because she recognized the value of what she had found. In the same way, our gratitude to God should be expressed in tangible acts of worship and generosity.

Consider how you respond to the wisdom of God. Do you merely admire it, or do you act on it? The queen did not keep her admiration private; she demonstrated it with costly gifts. Her example challenges us to honor God with our resources and our lives, not just with words.

The unprecedented abundance of spices also points to the unique blessing of that moment. God’s gifts to Solomon were extraordinary, and the queen’s response matched that greatness. When we recognize God’s goodness, our response should be fitting and wholehearted.
