1 Kings 10:6

And she said to the king, It was a true report that I heard in mine own land of thy acts and of thy wisdom.

1 Kings 10:6 (KJV)

The Queen of Sheba had traveled to Jerusalem after hearing reports of Solomon’s wisdom and prosperity. She came to test him with hard questions, and what she saw exceeded expectation: his palace, the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he made at the house of the LORD. Overwhelmed by all she witnessed, she said to the king, “It was a true report that I heard in mine own land of thy acts and of thy wisdom.” Her words in verse 6 are a personal confirmation: what she had heard from afar proved accurate when she saw it firsthand.

The queen’s statement moves from hearsay to firsthand testimony. She had heard of Solomon’s acts and wisdom, but now she had seen them with her own eyes. Her affirmation underscores the reality of Solomon’s God-given wisdom, which surpassed the wisdom of his time. The parallel account in 2 Chronicles 9:5 records the same declaration, confirming the historical event. In the following verse, the queen admits that she did not believe the reports until she came and saw, and that the half had not been told her—his wisdom and prosperity exceeded the fame she had heard.

Solomon’s wisdom was a gift from God, granted when he asked for understanding rather than riches or long life (1 Kings 3:5-14). The queen’s recognition of that wisdom points beyond Solomon to the source of all wisdom. Her visit also foreshadows a greater truth: God’s blessings upon His people can draw others to seek and acknowledge Him. Just as the queen came to witness Solomon’s wisdom, so others may be drawn to God through the evidence of His work in His people’s lives.

  • Seek wisdom from God: As Solomon sought wisdom and received it, we are invited to ask God for wisdom. James 1:5 encourages us to ask, and God gives generously.

  • Maintain integrity and a good reputation: The queen’s report about Solomon was accurate because his life matched his fame. Our actions and words should align with our faith, so that our reputation reflects the truth of God’s work in us.

  • Use God’s blessings to glorify Him: When God grants wisdom, talents, or material blessings, we are to use them to bring glory to Him and to be a testimony to His greatness.

  • Recognise God’s work in others: When we see wisdom, skill, or success in others, we should acknowledge that these blessings come from God, giving Him credit for the abilities and achievements we witness.

The queen’s words challenge us to consider what others see when they observe our lives. Do our actions confirm the reports of our faith? Solomon’s wisdom was not for his own glory but pointed to the God who gave it. As we grow in wisdom and receive God’s blessings, may our lives be a true report of His goodness, leading others to seek and honour Him.
