1 Kings 11:39
And I will for this afflict the seed of Dauid, but not for euer. 1 Kings 11:39 (KJV)
This verse records the words spoken by the prophet Ahijah, conveying God’s judgment concerning the descendants of David because of Solomon’s disobedience. Ahijah delivers the prophecy to Jeroboam, warning that the united kingdom established under David and Solomon will be divided after Solomon’s reign due to his idolatry.
Prior to this verse, we learn that Solomon had multiplied his wealth and power but had also married many foreign women who influenced him to worship their gods. The Bible recounts that God appeared to Solomon on at least two occasions—first in a dream granting him wisdom (1 Kings 3) and later warning him about the consequences of turning away from the covenant (1 Kings 9). Despite these warnings, Solomon did not fully heed them, and as a result God declared that the kingdom would be taken from Solomon’s son, leaving him with only one tribe (1 Kings 11:9‑13).
In 1 Kings 11:39 Ahijah says, “I will for this afflict the seed of David,” referring to the forthcoming division of the kingdom into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. This affliction is a direct consequence of Solomon’s idolatry and failure to keep God’s commandments.
While the verse itself does not contain the phrase “but not forever,” the broader biblical narrative assures that God’s covenant with David remains in effect. Although the united kingdom would be split, the lineage of David continued through the southern kingdom of Judah, preserving the promise made in 2 Samuel 7:12‑16 that the throne of David would endure.
Faithfulness to God – It emphasizes the importance of remaining faithful to God’s commandments and avoiding the temptation to compromise our faith by embracing worldly practices and beliefs. Consequences of Sin – Solomon’s actions had far‑reaching consequences not only for himself but also for his descendants. This reminds us that our choices can affect not only our lives but also the lives of those around us. God’s Covenant Faithfulness – Despite the discipline and affliction, God’s covenant with David remained intact. This highlights God’s faithfulness to His promises and serves as a reminder that even when we face discipline for our disobedience, God’s love and mercy endure.
In summary, 1 Kings 11:39 demonstrates God’s judgment upon the seed of David due to Solomon’s disobedience. The affliction came in the form of the division of the kingdom, but the promise to David was not permanently broken. Ultimately, this passage points to the faithfulness of God’s promises and encourages us to remain faithful and obedient to Him.
