1 Kings 11:38

Listen to this article

And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken vnto all that I command thee, and wilt walke in my wayes, and doe that is right in my sight, to keepe my Statutes and my Commandements, as Dauid my seruant did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for Dauid, and will giue Israel vnto thee. 1 Kings 11:38 (KJV)

Before diving into the verse, let’s set the context. In 1 Kings 11 we find the story of King Solomon, who was known for his wisdom and the grandeur of his reign. However, despite his wisdom, Solomon turned away from God in his later years, marrying many foreign wives and allowing them to lead him astray. This chapter highlights the consequences of Solomon’s disobedience to God’s commands.

Key Themes:

Obedience to God: The verse emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s commands. God makes it clear that if Solomon listens and follows all that He commands, walks in His ways, and does what is right in His sight, then God will bless Solomon and establish a sure house for him.

Comparison to David: God references David, Solomon’s father, as an example of obedience. David was known as a man after God’s own heart, who kept God’s statutes and commandments. God offers Solomon the opportunity to be blessed in the same way David was, if he remains faithful.

Lessons:

God’s faithfulness: The verse showcases God’s faithfulness to His promises. Despite Solomon’s shortcomings, God is willing to bless him if he turns back to Him and follows His ways. It demonstrates God’s desire to extend grace and restoration to those who seek Him sincerely.

Importance of obedience: The verse highlights the significance of obedience in our relationship with God. Obedience is not merely about following rules but rather a reflection of our love for God and our trust in His wisdom. It is a way to honor God and walk in His ways.

Application:

Seek God’s ways: Like Solomon, we must seek to know and follow God’s ways by studying His Word, praying, and seeking His guidance in our lives. This requires a humble and teachable heart.

Prioritize obedience: Our obedience to God should be a deliberate choice, grounded in a deep love for Him. We should strive to align our actions with His commandments, trusting that His ways are perfect and will lead us to a blessed life.

Repentance and restoration: If we have strayed from God’s path, we can repent and seek God’s forgiveness. He is always ready to extend grace and restore our relationship with Him.
